Twenty-fifteen seemed to be the year for local music festivals.

I do not have an official count, but it felt like just about every week someone was hosting a day-long multi-act concert somewhere.

This year, it’s been more of the same.

We’ve already had three radio sponsored mega shows (Spring Fling from 104.1 FM, Blazefest from 105.9 FM and 106.7 FM’s Jugfest) and the Fashawn-led (though Slighty Stoopid headlined) Grizzly Fest. This month alone, there is the brand-new Side of the Mountain Music Festival (for fans of Americana and folk music), Mega 97.9’s Summer Jam (with Vanilla Ice and other) and 51 Fifty Energy Drink’s reggae/hip-hop mash-up music festival (also the Father’s Day Blues Festival in the Tower District).

Which brings us to this week, when save the date announcements went out for two popular area music festivals (or three, depending how you view things).

First up is the Summer Sweat Block Party, Saturday, June 25 at Tioga Sequoia Brewing Company. The all-ages festival will feature more than a dozen acts (including Smoke Season, Wee Beasties, Judah and Carl Armada) and a $10 ticket price. It will also be a sort-of return for the Catacomb Party, which is partnering in to co-promote the event. So expect all-kinds of cool tie ins.

In related new, OG Catacomb Party band Fierce Creatures will do a reunion show (its first since 2014), Saturday, July 30 at the second Summer Sweat party, which will also feature performances from Black Milk, Crash, Banta, GoldBoot, Macondo, Cinco, Zee Will, Where Sea Meets Sky, Míse, Sister Grizzly, Radio Skies, Tomi Jean and Yip Yops.

Later this summer, the Spanspek Music and Arts Festival returns for its 11th year in Orosi. Organizers just announced a Sept. 17 date for the community-centered festival. The lineup has yet to be announced, but you can expect some up-and-coming local talent. Last year’s lineup included Orosi’s own Lance Canales and the Flood, Sanger-rapper Kooleidoscope and Fresno psych-rock band Light Thieves.
