His instrument is older than the U.S. Watch him play it with the Fresno Youth Orchestras
It would be an understatement to say Vadim Gluzman plays a vintage violin.
“Antique” would come closer to describing the 300-plus-year-old instrument, which was given to the Israeli musician on loan from the Stradivari Society – named for the famous violin maker Antonio Stradivari.
Stradivarius, or Strad for short, is used to refer to his instruments.
In certain circles, this Strad is famous. Dubbed the 1690 “Auer” Stradivari, the violin was once owned by Leopold von Auer, a Hungarian conductor and composer in the early 1900s.
Gluzman, who travels extensively to perform with orchestras around the world (he just played Carnegie Hall in New York City), is in Fresno this weekend as a special guest of the Youth Orchestras of Fresno.
The group hosts its Love Conquers All benefit concert on Sunday. Gluzman will perform Beethoven’s violin concerto and the Bach concerto for two violins – alongside Youth Philharmonic members Benjamin Pegram and Alexander Han.
The orchestras with also perform Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and Li Huanzhi’s “Spring Festival Overture.”
There is also a dessert auction prior to the performance.
