This popular rock band played Save Mart Center’s opening week. Now it has a return date

Matchbox Twenty is celebrating 2020 and the 20th anniversary of its album “Mad Season” with a 50-date summer tour (the Matchbox Twenty 2020 tour, obviously).

It includes a stop in Fresno. The band is slated to play Sept. 20 at the Save Mart Center arena.

Tickets for the show are $39.50-$179.50 and on sale noon Friday at the arena box office or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Presale tickets are available starting Tuesday. See Ticketmaster for a complete list of options.

Matchbox Twenty was one of the most popular bands of the early 2000s, especially following front man Rob Thomas’ team-up with Carlos Santana on the 1999 mega-hit “Smooth.” It was also one of the first to play the Save Mart Center, within the same week as Andrea Bocelli, Elton John and Toby Keith.

In a review at the time, Thomas was obviously the draw for the night. He was described as a modern-day Elvis.

To quote one 19-year-old fan: “He’s the father of my children. He just doesn’t know it yet.”

Jakob Dylan’s reunited band, The Wallflowers, plays support on the 2020 tour.
