Watch Joe Nichols, Sir Mix-A-lot team up on ‘Baby Got Back’ cover
“Baby Got Back” is pop music zeitgeist.
If you doubt it, you’ve never been in a crowd when the song comes on the jukebox.
So, of course Joe Nichols’ countrified version of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s 1992 hip-hop classic is going to get people excited. Especially, when the video for the song features Mix-a-Lot himself – and he’s wearing a cowboy hat. The video was posted on Nichols’ Facebook page this week and had more than 1 million views in the first 24 hours. It was quickly picked up by Buzzfeed, which made an appropriate “honky tonk badonkadonk” joke.
For Nichols fans, the song is old news. It may have started as a prank between band members, but it quickly earned a spot on the set list as a fan favorite. Nichols played the song during his opening set at Garth Brooks’ concert at the Save Mart Center in September. He also covered Merle Haggard’s “Okie From Muskogee,” which says something about Nichols as an artists and even more about the current state of country music.
While the country hip-hop combo might seem odd, it’s not unheard. See: Brad Paisley’s controversial collaboration with LL Cool J or Florida Georgia Line’s team-up with Nelly.
Also, the entire genre of hick-hop.
