Critical mass: Movie review roundup for March 4 - March 10
Gods of Egypt (PG-13)
Directed by: Alex Proyas
Starring: Brenton Thwaites, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gerard Butler, Courtney Eaton
The pitch: A young thief finds himself helping Egyptian god Horus. Set has declared himself the King of Egypt, a crown that Horus should be wearing. If the thief and god can’t find a way to stop Set, mankind is doomed.
The formula: Blow in some dusty bits of “Cleopatra.” Find an oasis of moments from “Clash of the Titans.” Caravan in parts of “300.”
Go see it: If you don’t care about plot, good acting and solid special effects, so long as there is a lot of cleavage.
Don’t go see it: If you can do something better, like pull out all of your own teeth.
What did they say: The movie not only casts most of the actors like they have never seen the Middle East, the bevy of accents makes this production feel less about Egyptian gods and more about the Tower of Babel.
