Mariposa County kicks off fair season in the Valley
It is officially fair season in the central San Joaquin Valley, with local fairs running almost each week into October. First up is the Mariposa County Fair, which kicks off noon Friday, Sept 4, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 6. Since 1939 the fair has given area families agricultural events, displays and demonstrations, plus live entertainment, a carnival, midway and more. This is old-fashioned fun. The three-day event features everything from horse shows and livestock auctions to a watermelon seed spitting contest and a destruction derby. Details: Noon, Friday, Sept. 4, to Sunday, Sept. 6 at Mariposa Fairgounds, 5007 Fairgrounds Road. Tickets: $5-$10; $12-$30 for the season. (209) 966-2432, www.mariposafair.com/.
