That polarizing contestant on ‘Love Island’ this season? He’s from Fresno
Reality dating show “Love Island USA” premiered its eighth season in June, with the most-watched TV debut in the history of the streaming platform Peacock.
The buzziest and most controversial contestant is Fresno native Kuman Chandler, who goes by KC.
Viewers quickly became attached to KC in his initial pairing with fellow contestant Aniya. But when KC chose to abandon their connection in favor of someone else, the audience became divided about his character.
The 23-year-old is one half of the final six couples left standing in the Love Island villa, where they can be voted out by other contestants or audience members. If KC makes it to the final episode on Sunday, he will have the chance to win a $100,000 cash prize.
Who is KC?
KC stirred controversy among viewers of the show due to his tumultuous separation from Aniya. KC and Aniya were initially coupled together, but were separated and introduced to new contestants in order to test their bonds. KC returned to the villa with a new partner, Tierra.
Aniya accused KC of being dishonest and disrespectful. Many fans of the show turned on him as a result.
Others felt that he had been unfairly ostracized for exploring his options.
The buzz he and his new partner Tierra have created helped them advance into the last six couples remaining in the villa.
Kuman Chandler’s Fresno roots
KC attended Edison High School before going on to study at Fresno City College and Reedley College. He played basketball at all three institutions.
He also created the local run club Kemet Run Athletics and hosted its first event in April. Kemet Run Athletics has hosted social functions in addition to runs, such as a karaoke event.
The club hosted a Love Island watch party at Woodward Park early in the season.
KC now works as a nursing assistant and expressed his desire to become a nurse practitioner on an episode of “Love Island.”
Other Fresnans on reality TV
KC is not the first Fresnan to be featured on reality television.
Local real estate investor Will Dyck won the dating show “Mr. Personality” in 2003, beating out 20 other men to win the heart of bachelorette Hayley Arp. On season 20 of The Bachelorette, Fresnan Dotun Olubeko was the final suitor left standing, getting engaged to Charity Lawson. The couple made history as the franchise’s first monoracial black couple to become engaged.
Bekah Martinez from Clovis competed for Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s heart on season 22 of “The Bachelor.” JoMarri Gable from Fresno was a contestant on season 18 of “The Bachelorette.”
Nor is KC even the first Fresnan to go on “Love Island USA.” Season 7 contestant Chris Seeley was also from Fresno.
And the city has been featured on multiple non-dating shows, as well.
Several Central Valley locals have been featured on The Voice, including Rudy Parris on season 3, Alyssa Witrado on season 22 and Ralph Edwards as first runner-up on season 28.
On season two of the show “Undercover Billionaire,” San Diego resident Elaine Culotti was tasked with the challenge of coming to Fresno to establish a successful business in a new city with only $100 and a cell phone.
