1976 No. 1 Hit, Originally Rejected by Rock Icon, Remains a Classic 50 Years Later

Long before "Let Your Love Flow" became a worldwide hit, another music legend had the chance to record it first.

Released by The Bellamy Brothers in 1976, the upbeat anthem became an international smash, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching No. 1 in several countries around the world. Nearly 50 years later, its infectious melody and optimistic message continue to make it a favorite on classic rock and oldies radio.

But before the song found its way to David and Howard Bellamy, it was offered to another music legend.

Written by Larry E. Williams, "Let Your Love Flow" was originally pitched to Neil Diamond, for whom Williams was a roadie at the time. But, Diamond decided not to record it because he felt the song didn't fit the direction of his career at the time. That decision opened the door for the Florida duo, who were still searching for the breakthrough hit that would introduce them to a wider audience.

It proved to be the opportunity of a lifetime.

"We just thought ['Let Your Love Flow'] was the best thing we'd heard at the time," Howard Bellamy later told Classic Bands. "And the rest is history. Still to this day, it's been hard to top that song. It was like a rocket launch. It took off so fast on the charts."

The Bellamy Brothers would eventually become one of country music's most successful duos, with hits including "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me" and "Redneck Girl," but it was "Let Your Love Flow" that put them on the map and turned them into international stars. Blending country, pop and soft rock influences, it showcased a sound that appealed to audiences across multiple genres.

The song's success also helped launch a career that has spanned more than five decades. The Bellamy Brothers have since released dozens of albums, earned multiple country No. 1 hits and continued touring well into the 21st century, building one of the longest-lasting careers in country music.

Looking back, it's hard to imagine anyone else recording "Let Your Love Flow." What began as a song one superstar chose to pass on became the Bellamy Brothers' signature recording and one of the most recognizable hits of the 1970s.

"I don't think we ever sit down and go, 'Okay, now we've really made it.' It's more like, 'Okay, we've had a No. 1 record, let's try something else now,'" David Bellamy told The Boot. "It's just kind of in our nature, I think."

Nearly 50 years after its release, its message of optimism and freedom continues to resonate with listeners around the world.
