Video Interview: Larry Brantley of ‘What's The Story, Wishbone?'

Over 30 years ago, “Wishbone” debuted on PBS. The series starred Soccer the dog as the title character, a Jack Russell Terrier with a huge imagination. Half of each episode would involve the domestic antics of a group of close-knit pre-teen kids and their dog, Wishbone. The other half of the episode, set in Wishbone’s imagination, would follow him as he starred in an adaptation of a classic work of literature, with themes relating to the situation at hand. Over the course of 50 episodes (plus a feature-length finale movie), “Wishbone” covered such classics as “The Phantom of the Opera,” “The Tempest,” “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and more.

Alas, the show was cancelled after only two seasons due to high production costs and the supposed lack of merchandise potential. Nevertheless, the show remained a staple on PBS stations, with new generations discovering their love of reading through the series. And now, three decades later, a new documentary has arrived to celebrate the story and legacy of “Wishbone.”

More News:Video Interview: ‘What's The Story, Wishbone?' Director Joey Stewart

“What’s the Story, Wishbone” was crafted by many of the same people who worked on the original series, including director Joey Stewart, producer Betty A. Buckley, and writer Stephanie Simpson. The film also features Larry Brantley. While younger viewers might recognize his voice from projects like “My Hero Academia,” “One Piece,” and “Fairy Tail,” his first major acting role was as the voice of Wishbone.

I had the opportunity to chat with Larry Brantley about his work on the classic “Wishbone” series, getting the gang back together for this documentary, and his greater career. He talks about learning the ropes on the set of “Wishbone” and shares a particularly emotional moment that happened during the production of the documentary (Trust me, if you’re a fan of the classic show, you will tear up during the documentary’s closing moments, and that’s all I have to say about that).
