1986 Blue-Collar Rock Anthem Scores a Remarkable Chart Resurgence 40 Years After Its Release

In 1986, there was no band more popular than Bon Jovi, and their 40-year-old blue-collar rock anthem is having a remarkable chart resurgence as music fans rediscover its enduring story of love, struggle, and survival.

"Livin' on a Prayer" tells the story of characters Tommy and Gina, two working-class kids doing their best to hold on through tough times. They lean on love, grit, and each other as they struggle to keep their dreams alive.

The song's message continues to resonate with listeners, four decades after the song's initial release. Its story of perseverance still connects with audiences who see their own lives reflected in Tommy and Gina's fight.

Billboard's Hard Rock Streaming Chart shows the song has the most gains of the week ending June 6, 2026. The song has been on this particular chart for an astounding 296 weeks, making its debut in June 2020.

Written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, with Desmond Child, "Livin' on a Prayer" was released in December 1986 and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100 on Valentine's Day, 1987. It has since been certified triple platinum, meaning the song has sold over 3M units.

The song was the cornerstone of the band's third LP, Slippery When Wet. It helped propel the album to massive commercial success, establishing Bon Jovi as one of the defining rock acts of the 1980s and beyond.

However, Bon Jovi told The Irish Times that he wasn't so sure about the song when it was initially written.

"I remember walking out of the room with Richie [Sambora] and I said, ‘Eh, it's okay. Maybe we should just put it on a movie soundtrack.' Richie looked at me and said, ‘You're an idiot. It's really good.'"

He continued, "I said, ‘I just don't know where it's going.' But it didn't have that boom-boom-boom bassline yet, so it sounded more like The Clash."

The song's equally iconic video captured Bon Jovi at the height of their 1980s fame. Shot largely in black and white and shot by Wayne Isham, "Livin' on a Prayer" was designed to give a behind-the-scenes feel before closing with a high-energy live performance segment that showcased the band's arena-rock presence.

The song itself became their second consecutive No. 1 single from Slippery When Wet. The first was "You Give Love A Bad Name," making Bon Jovi the first hard rock band to top the Billboard Hot 100 charts with back-to-back singles.
