Video Interview: Producer Betty A. Buckley Of ‘What's The Story, Wishbone?'
Sorry, “Beethoven,” but the most iconic dog of the 1990s was Soccer, a canine actor better known as the title character of the PBS series, “Wishbone.” Across 50 episodes and a finale movie, “Wishbone’s Dog Days of the West,” the show entertained kids and adults alike with its mixture of kid-friendly antics and earnest adaptations of classic stories like “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” “Robin Hood,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” and many more.
Now, decades after the end of the original series, the original team behind the show is back with a documentary about the history of “Wishbone,” entitled, “What’s the Story, Wishbone?” The film is a deep dive into the rise and untimely cancellation of “Wishbone,” made by the people who were there at the beginning. I’d like to think it’s just a matter of time before we get proper new “Wishbone” stories, but this should be more than enough to tide us over until then.

I had the opportunity to chat with Betty A. Buckley, the producer of both the original series and the new documentary. She shared plenty of stories from the set of classic “Wishbone” and the process of putting this new project together. She talks about the importance of respecting the target audience (children) and treating them with the respect they deserve as viewers. It’s this respect that has led to “Wishbone” being a cultural pillar that remains relevant even decades after its heyday. We all have fond memories of various TV shows from our youth that surely don’t hold up today. “Wishbone” is not one of those shows, since it holds up as well as it did when it first aired on PBS all those years ago.
Check out my complete chat with Buckley below. “What’s the Story, Wishbone” is currently airing on Public Television Stations and will be available to purchase on digital platforms on June 10.
