'Survivor Greece' Suspended After Contestant Loses Part of Leg During Filming
Survivor Greece has been pulled off the air indefinitely after a life-threatening accident involving 21-year-old contestant Stavros Floros.
Floros was spearfishing in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, May 10 during a break from filming when the incident occurred. According to Survivor Greece production company AcunMedya, Floros was "diving without a surface marker buoy in an area frequented by tourist vessels" when a boat "accidentally struck him."
The Toronto Sun reported that the boat's propeller partially amputated Floros' left leg below the knee and caused significant trauma to his right ankle.
"From the very first moment, there was an immediate response to provide assistance and safely transport the injured contestant, while the competent port authorities are investigating the causes of the incident in order to fully determine the circumstances," AcunMedya told the Toronto Sun in a statement. "The contestant remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition and is out of danger."
Greek television channel Skai also said they will assist with medical treatment and rehab for the Floros, noting, "Until the causes of the incident are fully investigated, the television broadcast of the program is being suspended."
Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said later on Tuesday, May 10 that Floros had a "very serious injury" and was "not in a condition to be transferred." However, the option is open if relatives request it.
Prior to the accident, Survivor Greece was airing its 13th season, which began on Jan. 11.
