Shania Twain Was Writing All Her Hits-Except This 1996 No. 1

Thirty years ago today, Shania Twain was in the middle of a career-defining run as she had another No. 1 hit. But like so many other chart-topping country hits, Twain, 60, didn't pen the tune.

On May 6, 1996, "You Win My Love" topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, marking Twain's third No. 1 hit and the fifth single from her 1995 album The Woman in Me.

By that point, Twain's blend of country roots and pop polish was reshaping the genre. Much of that sound was developed alongside her producer and then-husband, Robert "Mutt" Lange.

The two were married on Dec. 28, 1993 and worked closely together on many of Twain's hits. Lange, 77, produced Twain's 1997 album Come On Over and historically worked with other major names in music including AC/DC, Def Leppard, Foreigner and more.

But "You Win My Love" stood out from Twain's era of songwriting with her then-husband. That's because she didn't co-write it.

Lange wrote the track himself, leaning into the slick, radio-ready style that helped define her crossover appeal.

Still, Twain took the chart-topping song and made it hers. With its revved-up, car-themed lyrics and confident delivery, the song fit seamlessly into the bold, modern image she was building at the time.

In interviews over the years, Twain has been open about the collaborative dynamic that fueled the songs on The Woman in Me, including the No. 1 hit.

"We just jived so well," she said in a 2023 interview. "We loved all the same music; we were very compatible as creatives and our personalities were all about music."

Twain and Lange separated in 2008 after it was revealed that Lange had an affair with Twain's close friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. The split was highly publicized and marked a difficult period in Twain's life, both personally and professionally.

Twain later found love again with Frédéric Thiébaud, Marie-Anne Thiébaud's ex-husband. Despite not knowing each other outside of their business together, Twain found a "beautiful surprise" in seeing how "gracefully and graciously he was dealing with navigating the same pain" of being cheated on.

"He was so thoughtful about it all," she told Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast.

"It was not cool with him, but he was smarter about it. I was uncontrollably fragile over it, which I had never felt before ever because I thought for once I was stable. I really believe that I'm safe, so that really devastated me I think more than any other instability I've ever felt."

The two married on Jan. 1, 2011, and have been together since.
