League of Legends April Dev Update: Demacia Season 2, Arena Overhaul, and Major Gameplay Changes

Riot Games has shared its latest April Dev Update for League of Legends, outlining major changes coming in Season 2 of 2026. The update introduces a new narrative centered on Vayne, gameplay system adjustments, Arena mode expansions, and several quality-of-life improvements across Summoner's Rift.

Season 2 Heads to Demacia's Outskirts With Vayne at the Center

Season 2 of 2026 will take players to the outskirts of Demacia, where Vayne takes the spotlight in a darker storyline focused on hunting demons while uncovering her past. Motion comics featuring Vayne will also be released later in the Season, expanding the story beyond the game itself. This Season will be shorter than usual, lasting six patches instead of the standard eight. Riot stated this adjustment is to make room for a longer Season later in the year.

Battle Pass Adjustments and Skin Distribution Changes

The Battle Pass is receiving changes to better match the shorter Season structure.

Non-Prestige seasonal Pass skins will now be available as direct purchases. Their former slots will be replaced by Fiendish Mystery Skin loot orbs, which drop demon-themed Epic skins.

Upcoming Prestige skins include Shaco and LeBlanc, followed by Veigar in Season 3. Additional skins arriving this Season include Rain Shepherd Ivern, PROJECT: Quinn, Breadsticks Irelia, and Spaghetti alla Vel'Koz.

Gameplay Updates Focus on Role Flexibility and Build Diversity

This Season introduces adjustments to role quests and a broader push toward build diversity.

Top and mid lane role quests are being updated to better support roaming and flexible gameplay. Players will still need to return to lane to progress, but roaming and proxy play will no longer be heavily punished.

Top lane now gains increased experience from teamfighting rewards. Mid lane's empowered recall is replaced with a 6% bonus to Ability Power and Attack Damage.

Riot's goal is to reward a wider range of champions and playstyles rather than focusing primarily on split pushing or non-roaming mid laners.

The update also expands support for alternate builds such as AP Ezreal, ADC Kennen, and attack speed Xin Zhao.

Runes and Item System Changes

Two runes are returning this Season: Deathfire Touch and Stormraider's Surge. Stormraider's Surge will replace Phase Rush as a movement-speed rune option.

Item updates include changes to Dusk and Dawn, two new starting items, new omnivamp boots, and the removal of Trailblazer and Opportunity.

The next champion release will be a mid-lane AP assassin.

Arena Receives Major Structural Overhaul

Arena is getting a major redesign in Season 2. Standard Arena matches will be replaced by rotating Events that change how the mode plays.

The three Events include:

  • 3x6: six teams of three players
  • Bravery: limited selections focused on Bravery or Crowd Favorite choices
  • Swift Arena: four teams of two with faster matches

A new map, the Petricite Grove, is being added, along with updates to the Ancestral Woods.

A new system called Augment Levels allows players to enhance augments with stronger or additional effects, such as Fan the Hammer firing more missiles.

Over twenty new and reworked Guests of Honor are being added, including Nocturne, who creates dark zones, and Shaco, who introduces chaos by randomizing augment tiers.

More than thirty new or returning Augments are also being added from ARAM Mayhem and new designs.

WASD Controls, Ranked Readiness, and Quality-of-Life Features

WASD controls are now ready for Ranked play and will go live in patch 26.9 after reaching near parity with Point-and-Click controls.

Champion-specific keybinds are also being added, allowing players to customize controls per champion.

A new system later this Season will allow teams to vote to end games early when game-ruining behavior is detected. Offending players and their premades lose LP and receive punishments, while allies are LP neutral and enemies receive full LP.

Client and Community Features

A new Discord integration is being rolled out in beta in the US, Canada, and Brazil. Players will be able to link Riot and Discord accounts, invite friends to parties, and join lobbies via shared links.

Your Shop returns on May 5th, followed by the Blue Essence Emporium on May 13th.

The April Dev Update highlights major gameplay changes, system updates, Arena expansion, and a new Demacia-focused Season. Riot encourages players to watch the full video for additional details and community highlights.
