Taylor Swift Admits She Wrote ‘Love Story' When She Was Mad at Her Parents

It's no surprise that when The New York Times recently polled over 250 music insiders and six of the publication's own critics to compile a list of the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters, Taylor Swiftwas one of the top picks. She's won Grammys, she was named Billboard's Top Artist of the 21st Century in 2025, and she has sold millions of albums. So how does she write her iconic songs? According to Taylor, one of her famous hits started with her parents!

Taylor Swift, she's just like us. Okay, so maybe not really. After all, how many of us can say that we sold out a multi-country (make that multi-continent) concert tour that drew in over 10 million screaming fans? But when it comes to her creative process, the 36-year-old Grammy winner has one muse that we can all relate to.

Remember those tumultuous teen years when everything felt oh-so Earth-shatteringly important? And of course, your parents just didn't get you. Well, it looks like Taylor also remembers that time of her life-and it served as the catalyst behind the creation of"‘Love Story."

In The New York Times interview, Swift shares the spark behind her first forays into songwriting, "I started writing songs when I was 12. As soon as my love for singing and picking up an instrument happened, songwriting just spontaneously just started becoming the entire cornerstone of my life."

She continues, explaining the type of music that really struck a chord with her early on, "A hypothetical structure would be, you know, first verse, you know, little girl learns a lesson that in the chorus her mom teaches her about. And the little girl grows up, and she realizes, Oh my god, my mom was right about this. Now, the second time you hear the hook, that same hook means something a little bit different because she's, like, grown up in her life."

And that brings her to"‘Love Story." The lead single from her 2008 album Fearless, "Love Story," shot to the top of the charts, and in 2015 the Recording Industry Association of America certified it eight-times platinum.

The song focuses on, as the name suggests, a Romeo-and-Juliet-esque love story in which an angsty teen is forbidden to pursue the romance they desire. At the time of its release, fans speculated that the hit was about a rumored relationship with Joe Jonas. But, as it turns out, that isn't exactly true.

So what was the real inspiration behind the chart-topper? Swift explains, "I think the first time I felt like, I don't care if people hate this because I love it so much, was when I wrote the song "Love Story" when I was 17, sitting in my bedroom, mad at my parents, because they wouldn't let me go on a date. With a guy who was too old, so I shouldn't have been on a date with him anyway."

What's the moral of this "love" story? Swift sprinkles in a pinch of humor, adding, "And this is why you need to discipline your kids. Because they might write songs. That go No. 1."
