Disneyland Moving Forward With Plans to Demolish Monsters, Inc. Attraction to Make Way For New Avatar Land

Though we're still a few years away from the official opening of Disney's highly anticipated Avatar Land on the West Coast, the iconic theme park company has reportedly filed demolition permits to clear away a popular attraction.

According to The New York Post, the new permits are specifically tied to Disney's California Adventure, which would see the demolition of Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! to help make room for the new Avatar-themed area of the park.

As per The New York Post's findings, the new permits cover the existing Monsters, Inc. building as well as the Hollywood Lounge location, marking a major step forward with Disney's plans to expand and renovate the property.

However, Disney was quick to emphasize that the permits are all part of early planning for the park's future projects, with Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to Rescue! currently slated to remain open until 2027.

Opening in January 2006, Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! offers a dark ride retelling of Pixar's beloved 2001 film, Monsters, Inc. As with several other iconic Disney dark rides, the attraction specifically takes guests through key scenes of the film, allowing riders a face-to-face encounter with some of the movie's most recognizable characters.

Despite its popularity among visitors, Disney has since confirmed that Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! would be permanently closed to make room for the park's upcoming Avatar land.

Like its sister counterpart in Disney's Animal Kingdom on the East Coast, the new version of Avatar Land will take visitors to the furthest reaches of outer space, inviting them to step foot into the luminescent world of Pandora. Along with a scenic boat ride, the new park area will also feature a unique emphasis on water-based environments, taking notable inspiration from the more recent Avatar sequels.
