Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani announces birth of second child
LOS ANGELES - The Ohtani family has grown to a foursome.
Shohei Ohtani and his wife, Mamiko, announced the birth of their second child overnight Saturday via Instagram.
"We are again overjoyed to experience this wonderful day in our lives together," the Ohtanis posted. "Thank you for being born safely. We would also like to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported us throughout this journey."
The post included a photo of a baby's hands and feet poking out from a blue blanket. But it did not mention the gender of their second baby or the baby's name. Tucked in the baby's arms was a tiny stuffed animal version of Ohtani's beloved dog, Decoy, who also got his own photo at the bottom of the post.
The Ohtanis' first child, a daughter, was born in April 2025. Shohei Ohtani missed two games for her birth. The Dodgers were on the road at the time and placed Ohtani on paternity leave, calling up a player from Triple-A to replace him.
This time, Ohtani was away from the team and did not play Friday against the Baltimore Orioles. But he was back in the lineup Saturday night, batting leadoff as the DH and hitting a home run in the ninth inning of the Dodgers' 3-2 loss.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he expects Ohtani to make his next pitching start as scheduled on Wednesday in Minnesota.
"I talked to him briefly (before the game), congratulated him and Mamiko," Roberts said. "He says his body feels great, so the day off was good for him. But I didn't talk much about anything else, so I think for us it's just continue to move forward like we've been doing."
Ohtani has never publicly revealed his daughter's name and has carefully avoided showing her face in the rare family photos he posts to his social media.
