Colorado Coach Deion Sanders Shares Major Personal Update After Cancer Diagnosis

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders delivered the kind of update that interests football fans this week.

After spending much of the last year battling serious health issues, including bladder cancer that required multiple surgeries and the removal of his bladder, Sanders announced that he is officially cancer-free. The news comes just months before the start of the 2026 college football season and marks a major personal victory for one of the most recognizable figures in sports.

Speaking during an appearance on Good Morning America, the Colorado coach reflected on how dramatically his life has changed over the last 12 months. At this time last year, Sanders was facing uncertainty about his future and fighting a health battle that few outside his inner circle fully understood. Now, the 58-year-old says he has his health, confidence and energy back as he prepares for another season leading the Buffaloes.

"It's a blessing," Sanders said. "I've got my health back. I've got my swagger back."

Deion Sanders Opens Up About Difficult Cancer Battle

Sanders has never been shy about discussing personal challenges, and he once again spoke candidly about the reality of his diagnosis.

The Hall of Fame football legend revealed that he underwent 14 surgeries during his battle with bladder cancer. There were moments when the future was uncertain, making this week's announcement especially meaningful.

"Last year at this time I was fighting cancer, didn't know which way it was going to go," Sanders said. "We fought the battle and we won the battle, fighting cancer. I'm cancer-free."

Sanders credited both his medical team in Colorado and his faith for helping him navigate one of the most difficult periods of his life.

The Colorado coach also used the opportunity to encourage men to prioritize routine health screenings and seek medical attention when something feels wrong.

Sanders described experiencing troubling symptoms before his diagnosis, explaining that many people ignore warning signs because they are embarrassed to discuss them.

His message was simple: don't wait.

Colorado Football Receives Encouraging News Before 2026 Season

While the health update is far more important than football, the timing is certainly welcome news for Colorado.

The Buffaloes are looking to rebound from a disappointing 3-9 campaign in 2025 after winning nine games the year before. Sanders signed a lucrative contract extension with Colorado in 2025 and remains the face of the program as it continues navigating life after former stars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.

Despite the challenges of the past year, Sanders made it clear that he's eager to return to the sidelines.

"I'm ready to go coach my butt off this season," Sanders said. "I'm having a good time."

For Colorado fans, hearing those words may be the most encouraging offseason development yet. Before wins, losses or conference standings become part of the conversation again, Sanders has already secured his most important victory.

And this one had nothing to do with football.
