North Torrance baseball defeats Francis Parker for CIF SoCal Regional championship

The North Torrance baseball team made it two for two in CIF championship games Saturday.

One week after winning the CIF Southern Section Division 7 championship game, the Saxons added the CIF SoCal Regional Division IV title to their collection.

Sei Nagashima had a 4-for-4 day with a home run and a double to pace the seventh-seeded Saxons to a 9-3 win over fifth-seeded Francis Parker.

The Saxons scored six runs in the second inning, which included Nagashima's solo home run. They also had two-run singles from Tanner Okawa and Lucas Blackwood and an RBI single from David Iniguez.

Seth Narasaki picked up the win for North. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts, three hits and one unearned run allowed.

North went on a dominant run in the playoffs. The Saxons outscored their opponents 31-4 in the Southern Section playoffs with two shutouts, and they had a 16-3 scoring advantage in the regional playoffs with two shutouts.

"This group formed a bond that was more than just teammates," North coach Diego Alarcon said. "They're best friends. The biggest thing we tried to teach them was at some point, this will be over and these guys went about creating more memories.

"They all faced adversity throughout their high school career. They enjoyed the winning (in the playoffs) and they brought a new energy and excitement to the games. Of course, we had to set new goals in the regionals and at times we had to fire them up talking about creating more memories."

North battled in the Pioneer League, finishing in the third place. In the playoffs, the Saxons got hot and ended the season with a 19-16 record and an eight-game winning streak.

This was Alarcon's first year coaching the Saxons. Before taking over, he held assistant coaching jobs at Cerritos College and El Camino College.

"We took some bumps early, we had some injuries, but I think our conference (Pioneer League) prepped us for the playoffs going into Division 7," Alarcon said. "South went to Division 3, losing to Millikan, El Segundo played Gahr in Division 2 …Those were some good teams and we had some tough losses."
