Marta Kostyuk Accused Of 'Classless' Gesture After Loss To Mirra Andreeva

Mirra Andreeva and Marta Kostyuk squared off in the semifinals at Roland Garros this Thursday. Although it was expected to be an intense battle, there was just one-way traffic on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Andreeva punched her ticket to Saturday's final at Roland Garros with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kostyuk. It was arguably the best performance of the 19-year-old's career given the pressure she was facing coming into this match.

"I just told myself that no matter what happens, I'm just gonna fight, give my best. If she ends up winning, she's gonna have to really work for it. With this mindset, I ended up winning."

Even though Andreeva put together an incredible performance, Kostyuk didn't shake her hand at the net. That decision didn't sit well with tennis fans, that's for sure.

"Kostyuk no handshake gimmick has got to stop," one fan said. "Very unsportsmanlike and shows that she has a huge ego."

"No handshake or even a head nod from Kostyuk, low class clown," a second fan commented.

"Kostyuk no handshake like a sore loser," another fan wrote.

"Marta predictably doesn't give Mirra a handshake after being walloped in straight sets," another tennis fan commented.

Why didn't Marta Kostyuk shake hands with Mirra Andreeva?

Kostyuk, who was born in Ukraine, has made it clear she won't shake hands with Russian players as long as the war is going on in her home country.

"The only person I shake hands with is Daria Kasatkina because she didn't just change her passport, but also openly said she doesn't support the war and all that," Kostyuk said. "That's why me and other girls decided to shake her hand, simply out of respect. ... I don't necessarily recall [others] speaking out against the war. I don't know what their intentions were and they haven't spoken about it. It's just a flag next to your name, but I don't see it as a complete picture."

For what it's worth, Andreeva had nothing but kind things to say about Kostyuk after she lost to her in the Madrid Open final.

"I'd like to congratulate Marta and the team for this amazing win today and for how your clay season is going as well," the 19-year-old star said. "You won two tournaments in a row. You're playing very well. Congrats for the win today as well."
