SF Giants' Bader hits injured list for second time this season
Center fielder Harrison Bader is headed back to the 10-day injured list for the second time this season, the Giants announced on Saturday afternoon, his latest ailment being left plantar fasciitis.
Outfielder Will Brennan, who was just optioned to make room for right fielder Jung Hoo Lee, was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Bader’s place on the active roster.
Bader, who turns 32 next week, missed a month due to a left hamstring strain and has only played in 30 of San Francisco’s 57 games this season after signing a two-year, $20.5 million deal to join the Giants in the offseason.
Outfielder Drew Gilber served as a defensive replacement for Bader in the bottom of the ninth inning in Friday’s 8-6 walk-off loss, and the 25-year-old rookie should get his share of starts in Bader’s absence. Over 38 games this season, Gilbert is hitting .229 with two homers and a .620 OPS.
Bader struggled at the plate to start the season due to his hamstring ailment, posting a .338 OPS over 15 games before being placed on the injured list in mid-April. He provided an instant boost for San Francisco’s struggling offense upon returning on May 11, hitting four homers (including two grand slams in a week) over 15 games with a .769 OPS.
Along with Bader, left fielder Heliot Ramos is currently on the 10-day injured list due to a right quad strain he sustained on May 15. At the time of his injury, manager Tony Vitello said that Ramos would be out for a “handful of weeks.”
