Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. Breaking Out of Slump In Style

As the New York Yankees look to finish the month of May on a high note, the recent production of one of their star players has surprisingly been overlooked.

Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. is turning his season around after a rough start. Over his first 42 games, the sweet-swinging lefty was only hitting .200/.280/.320 with a 72 wRC+. For a player who boldly predicted that he'd join the 50-50 club before the season, it was a pretty bad look.

Chisholm tried everything to get going at the plate. In addition to the expected adjustments a hitter would make at the plate, the 28-year-old turned to some old-fashioned baseball superstitions to end the slump. He decided to start wearing the pants of his Yankees teammates, those being Trent Grisham and Giancarlo Stanton; when Chisholm began seeing success while wearing the latter's, Stanton joked "they've got homers in them".

Regardless of whether it was the process or the superstitions, Chisholm's slump is officially a thing of the past. What has been under the radar, however, is just how hot the Yankees' second baseman has been at the plate over the past two weeks.

Across the past 12 games, Chisholm is hitting .400/.471/.667 with a monstrous 219 wRC+. Of his 18 hits, seven have gone for extra bases (four doubles, a triple and two homers). He recorded a hit in 10 of the 12 games, with seven of them being multi-hit games. For good measure, Chisholm drew six walks and swiped two bases.

Thanks to this heater, Chisholm repaired his slash line to a far more respectable .246/.324/.400 and his wRC+ jumped to 106. He now leads all American League second basemen in fWAR at 1.4 when Chisholm's elite defense and baserunning are factored in.

Over the month of May, Chisholm hit .302/.378/.488 with nine extra-base hits, three home runs, four stolen bases, a 145 wRC+ and 1.0 fWAR. A 50-50 season is a unrealistic possibility at this point, but if Jazz can build upon this steadier play, he can remind the baseball world of the incredible talent he truly possesses.
