Bay Area athletes to watch at CIF state track and field championships
The CIF state track and field meet takes place this weekend at Buchanan High School in Clovis, and numerous Bay Area athletes will be represented.
The two-day showcase begins with preliminary events on Friday at 3 p.m. and concludes with finals on Saturday starting at 4:30 p.m.
Friday's events kick off with the girls 4×100-meter relay prelims, which feature quartets from local schools St. Ignatius, Carondelet, Pittsburg, St. Francis, Campolindo, Los Gatos, Oakland and San Ramon Valley.
Some of the top boys qualifiers include Harker’s Brady Tse, who has the fastest time in the state in the 300 hurdles at 36.62. Case Jacobson of St. Francis has the No. 2 mark in the boys shot put (65-3 ½).
“I feel I still have a lot left in the tank,” Jacobson said after last weekend's sectionals. “I’m hoping for a new PR next week.”
Monta Vista’s Ryan Shen has the third-best mark in the long jump (24-4) and Westmoor’s Benicio Labuguen is No. 3 in the triple jump at 48-7.
Dougherty Valley’s Ayden Parker is ranked fourth in the state in the 400 with a best time of 46.83. De La Salle’s Chase Young has the fourth-fastest time in the 110 high hurdles at 13.67.. The De La Salle 4×100 relay team has run 40.69, fifth-best in the state.
Los Altos’ Daniela Hughes has the top mark in the state in the girls triple jump at 42-7 ½.
“My goal is to go 43 feet and break the CCS record,” Hughes said.
Woodside’s Wendy Brown had the section's all-time mark in the event at 43-2 ½ in 1984. But that was wind-aided. Mt. Pleasant's Vashti Thomas jumped a wind-legal 43-1 ½ in 2008.
Hughes is also No. 5 in the 100 hurdles (13.80). Kira Gant Hatcher of St. Mary’s-Berkeley leads the state in the long jump at 20-7 ½ and is fourth in the triple jump (41-6). Her teammate Corinne Jones ranks third in the triple jump at 41-10.
St. Ignatius’ Ellie McCuskey-Hay ranks third in the long jump at 20-4 ¾. Defending state champion Leilani Laruelle of Monta Vista has gone 5-10 in the high jump, the top mark in the state, a height that’s also been cleared by two others, including transgender athlete AB Hernandez of Jurupa Valley. Hernandez also has the second-best marks in the state in the long jump and triple jump.
Mitty’s Malia Martin ranks second in the state in the discus at 157-3. Palo Alto’s Amaya Bharadwaj, the CCS record holder, has the No. 3 mark in the state in the 3,200 at 10:01.93. Soleil Warner of St. Ignatius ranks fourth in the 300 hurdles (41.96).
Clara Adams, who won the 400 running for North Salinas last year but was disqualified for using a fire extinguisher during her post-race celebration, is now at Long Beach-Wilson and is part of a 4×400 relay team that has run an incredible 3:33.83. Adams has run 51.98 for the 400, the fastest time in the state.
