Padres minors: Lan-Hong Su debuts in Arizona, David Morgan's struggles continuing in El Paso

Because they missed out on the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes, the Padres had international money to spend in October.

So they signed Taiwanese right-hander Lan-Hong Su for $775,000 before the 2025 international amateur window closed.

Seven months later, the 19-year-old debuted in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Saturday, striking out four over two scoreless innings in the Padres' 9-2 win over a Guardians affiliate.

Su allowed one hit and two walks. He sat 93-96 mph with his fastball, 84-87 mph with his slider and 84-86 mph with his splitter.

Before signing with the Padres, the 6-foot-1 Su struck out 14 in 7⅓ innings for Chinese Taipei in the 18U World Cup in Japan.

Su is ranked No. 16 among Padres prospects by MLB.com.

Center fielder Fabian Alcantara (.586 OPS) went 2-for-4 and hit his first homer.

First baseman Jhojan Downer (1.086 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits and right fielder Jesmaylin Arias (.714 OPS) drove in two runs on three hits, including a double.

The Padres are 5-6.
