CCS playoff roundup: Dolata, Holland led Stevenson past Castilleja in lacrosse

PEBBLE BEACH — Brogan Dolata and Sydney Holland each collected four goals Tuesday as Stevenson opened the Central Coast Section Division II girls lacrosse playoffs with an historic 13-7 win over Castilleja of Palo Alto.

Seeded No. 2 in the playoffs, the Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division champion Pirates had never won a playoff game, having been outscored 40-9 in two previous postseason appearances.

Stevenson (14-4) will host No. 3 Woodside — 13-10 winners over Los Gatos — on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

The Pirates went undefeated in the Gabilan Division this past spring and have won 12 of their last 13 matches since a 2-3 start to the season.

Georgia Bonifas added three goals for the Pirates, while Sam Rianhard had a goal and two assists, and Tatum Le Towt one goal. Zola Ducker recorded seven saves between the pipes.

Rianhard also finished with five ground balls, while Dolata and Molly McAfee each had three, and Carol Bufkin and Holland a pair.

Boys lacrosse

Stevenson 15, Priory 5: Aaden Ornelas was sensational in goal as the top-seeded Pirates opened the CCS Division II playoffs with a rout of Priory of Palo Alto.

Topher Moan and Quin Russell each compiled five goals, with Moan adding a pair of assists. Connor Aeschliman tallied a goal and three assists for the Gabilan Division runner-ups.

Stevenson will host No. 3 Palo Alto — 4-1 winners over Palma — in Thursday’s semifinals at 5:30 p.m. The Pirates are 6-2 in their last eight matches, with both losses being by one goal to Gabilan Division champion Los Gatos and Division I No. 3 seed Menlo.

Fin Mink produced two goals and an assist for Stevenson, while Derek Diniz added a goal and two assists, and Laird Welch a goal and an assist. Bobby Lund was a standout on faceoffs.

Palo Alto 4, Palma 1: The No. 4 seeded Chieftains were held to a season low one goal in falling to No. 3 seed Palo Alto in the Division II playoffs.

Bryce Amaral finished with seven saves between the pipes for Palma (9-7), runner-ups in the Gabilan Division to Los Gatos. Chase Amaral scored the only goal on an assist from Cooper Dukes.

Volleyball

Sacred Heart Cathedral 3, Monterey 0: PK Swartz had 18 kills in his final match as the Toreadores fell 26-24, 26-23, 25-11 to No. 3 seed Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco in the CCS Division II quarterfinals.

Monterey, who advanced to the quarterfinals after Monday’s win over Westmoor, won four of its final five matches, including a play-in win over Cypress Division champion Monterey Bay Academy to reach the postseason.

Ryan Gallagher collected 12 digs for the Toreadores, with Jeremy Andoy contributing 10 digs and Kale Park eight.

Carmel 3, Saratoga 0: The top-seeded Padres opened the Division II postseason with a 27-25, 25-21, 26-24 win over stubborn Saratoga, earning the right to face Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League nemesis Mt. Madonna on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Champions of the Gabilan Division, the Padres (18-4) have won 10 straight games. Mt. Madonna (18-13) knocked off No. 5 Hillsdale in four sets to reach the semifinals.
