Tributes Pour In After Death Of Braves Legend Bobby Cox
The Atlanta Braves sadly announced Saturday that former manager and World Series champion Bobby Cox has died at the age of 84.
Cox, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014, had 2,504 wins as a manager. Although he spent the majority of his career coaching the Braves, he also spent four years with the Toronto Blue Jays. Of course, the highlight of his career was winning a World Series title in 1995.
"We are overcome with emotion on the passing of Bobby Cox, our treasured skipper. Bobby was the best manager to ever wear a Braves uniform. He led our team to 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants, and the unforgettable World Series title in 1995. His Braves managerial legacy will never be matched," the team said. "Bobby was a favorite among all in the baseball community, especially those who played for him. His wealth of knowledge on player development and the intricacies of managing the game were rewarded with the sport's ultimate prize in 2014 – enshrinement into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
"And while Bobby's passion for the game was unparalleled, his love of baseball was exceeded only by his love for his family. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we send our sincerest condolences to his beloved wife, Pam, and their loving children and grandchildren."
Bobby Cox's legacy won't be forgotten.
Tributes for Cox came pouring in after his death was confirmed by the Braves.
"One of the best baseball people ever - great as GM and manager, too. RIP Bobby," MLB insider Jon Heyman said.
"One of the most beloved figures in Braves and MLB history. Bobby was like a father figure to countless folks across the game," Braves beat writer Mark Bowman wrote. "He got to enjoy Andruw being elected to the Hall of Fame and Snit being inducted into the Braves HOF during his final months. He has impacted the Braves since the late 1970s and his influence will continue to benefit the organization for years to come. He was arguably the most influential figure in Braves history. RIP Bobby. You'll be missed, but never forgotten."
"Rest in peace to Atlanta Braves legend Bobby Cox," Rep. Mike Collins said. "He will be missed by Georgians, Braves fans across the world, and the game he helped shape forever."
"Bobby Cox was the greatest manager to ever wear the uniform. He's like a father to so many of our favorite players growing up," one fan said. "This is heart shattering."
Our thoughts are with Cox's loved ones.
May he rest in peace.
