Prep roundup: Bishop O'Dowd ties Encinal 23-23 in wild softball game
Forty-six runs, roughly 210 minutes and seven innings weren't enough to determine a softball winner in Alameda on Tuesday.
Bishop O'Dowd and Encinal played a game for the ages, ending in a 23-23 tie after starting the game at 4 p.m.
Encinal coach Maureen Layag confirmed to the Bay Area News Group that the game will officially be recorded as a tie despite being a league contest in the West Alameda County Conference's Foothill Division.
"Final decision is that both teams agreed to call it a tie after seven innings, 3 1/2 hours and Alameda Parks and Rec having games scheduled on our field," Layag told this news organization.
Bishop O'Dowd is now 9-11-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league play this season. Encinal is 10-9-1 and 0-3-1 in the WACC Foothill.
Two big innings stood out. Trailing 8-0 after three and 10-3 after four, O'Dowd scored 13 runs in the top of the fifth to take a 16-10 lead.
Encinal responded with one in the bottom of the frame, then the Jets turned on the afterburners in the sixth. Answering three O'Dowd runs that gave the Dragons a 19-11 advantage, Encinal scored 11 times to position itself to close out a 22-19 win.
Not on this day.
O'Dowd responded with four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 23-22 lead, but Encinal had one more response.
Tamyrah Jamison led off the Jets' half with a solo home run to tie the game, but Encinal couldn't scratch across one more run to win it. Sherrielyn Ferrer hit a one-out single and advanced to third with two stolen bases.
Yet despite a dropped third strike that could have scored Ferrer, Megan Leung was thrown out on the play, ending the game in a state of suspended animation.
The teams combined for 32 hits and 12 errors, according to the MaxPreps box score. The game's total pitch count was 366.
For Encinal, Kiley Wong drove in four runs, Sonia Walker and Jaydah Tautalatasi-Robinson had three RBIs, Ferrer, Jamison and Emiko Takemoto each had two and Megan Leung knocked in one.
Nora Civiello-Sousa led O'Dowd with six RBIs. Blake Kellerman drove in five runs, while Aundrea Evans, Marina Beers and Tulip Barnes each had two. Ziggy Savage, Amiri Green and Zoe Bolick batted in one apiece.

Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
No. 13 California 8, Dublin 1
After picking up a win over a top-15 Granada team last week, Dublin was unlucky against the No. 13 team in the Bay Area News Group rankings on Tuesday at California.
The San Ramon home cooking was good to the Grizzlies, who did most of their damage in a prolific seven-run third inning.
Shayla Santolucito had the big hit, a three-run triple, and finished with four RBIs. Ashley Carano hit a two-run single and Bella Bagneschi drove in Gabriella Cohune with a base hit. Alina Curiel brought in Mia Donati with a sacrifice bunt.
Audrey Cotton got the win for Cal with five innings pitched, allowing one unearned run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Gabriella Nudo closed it out with two innings of one-hit work and three strikeouts against a walk.
Cal improved to 13-10, 7-5. Dublin is 8-15, 4-8.
No. 16 San Mateo 6, No. 18 Hillsdale 5 (8)
A classic rematch of the teams' nine-inning thriller in the Peninsula Athletic League's Bay Division needed extra innings once again in the latest chapter.
After decades of futility against Hillsdale, San Mateo has now won two in a row against the Knights. Christian Babcock was in San Mateo and has the full story here.

The Irish brought their bats down the Peninsula on Tuesday as five players (Max Matthews, Lucas Fung, Chasin Deninger, Max Nylander and Brody O'Sullivan) drove in a run.
Cooper Rogers Lewis had a strong performance on the mound, pitching six strong innings with one run allowed on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
