Giants promote Bryce Eldridge, Jesus Rodriguez from Triple-A to boost flailing offense

With the San Francisco Giants in free fall after going winless on a six-game trip to face Philadelphia and Tampa Bay, the Chronicle has learned the team will call up two top prospects, Bryce Eldridge and Jesus Rodriguez.

The Giants are last in the majors in runs, homers and walks, so a shakeup is unsurprising, with Eldridge batting .333 with five home runs and a .963 OPS at Triple-A Sacramento and Rodriguez was hitting .330 with an .840 OPS for the River Cats.

Eldridge, 21, was 3-for-28 in 10 games with the Giants at the end of last season. The first baseman/DH, who is No. 20 on MLB.com's prospects list, was the Giants' first-round draft pick in 2023.

Rodriguez, who was acquired from the Yankees last July in a deal that sent reliever Camilo Doval to New York, can play everywhere but shortstop and pitcher, so he could see time almost anywhere, including catcher. Rodriguez, 24, will be making his major-league debut. MLB.com lists him as the Giants' 18th-best prospect.

Despite his slow start, Rafael Devers is unlikely to come out of the lineup for any extended stretch and he is a better first baseman than is Eldridge, and DH Casey Schmitt has been one of the Giants few consistent contributors. Schmitt's ability to play all infield positions, however, could free up DH at-bats for Eldridge when he's not at first.

Outfielders Will Brennan and Jerar Encarnacion are most likely to come off the roster. Encarnacion is out of options so would have to be designated for assignment, making him available on waivers unless the Giants can trade him.
