Blue Jays' Jose Berrios Shares Big Injury Update on Sunday

The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Cleveland Guardians by a final score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. Before the game, starting pitcher Jose Berrios shared an update as he recovers from an elbow injury. It seems as if he could return soon, but the Blue Jays have the final decision on the situation.

"Jose Berrios says he'll leave it to the Blue Jays' front office & coaching staff to determine when he returns to the MLB level, but says 'physically, I've been feeling great.' Slated to throw 70-75 pitches at AAA Tues after which he could be ready for MLB if the outing goes well," Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports.

Many starting pitchers end up returning once they reach the 75-pitch mark in their rehab starts. If he can get to around 75 pitches on Tuesday, it would not be surprising to see him join the rotation not long after the outing.

Berrios had an inconsistent season in 2025. Nevertheless, he is still a talented pitcher. The Blue Jays will benefit from his return once it happens.

The team will continue to closely monitor and provide updates on Jose Berrios' injury status.

The 31-year-old starter has pitched at the big league level since the 2016 season. He made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins. Berrios ended up earning two All-Star selections during his time in Minnesota. He joined the Blue Jays during the 2021 season.

Berrios has endured a number of ups and downs with Toronto. At times he has struggled without question, while at other times he has been quite reliable. The 2025 campaign saw Berrios pitch to a 4.17 ERA across 31 total outings. He did not appear in the postseason while Toronto made a World Series run.

The Blue Jays need starting pitching help at the moment. While Kevin Gausman and Dylan Cease have both performed well, Toronto's rotation has questions overall. Max Scherzer has especially struggled, as he currently holds a 9.64 ERA. Meanwhile, Eric Lauer was recently moved to the bullpen after pitching to a 6.75 ERA.

Jose Berrios' return will give the Blue Jays crucial depth in the starting rotation. However, it remains to be seen when he will officially return. It could happen sooner rather than later as long as no setbacks occur.
