Tim Howard Names Jim Curtin as Ideal U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Replacement
Once again, the United States Soccer Federation finds itself in the spotlight. Previously, Matt Crocker left his position within the federation just months before the 2026 World Cup to join Saudi Arabia's project.
Then, Tim Howard made headlines by suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino's backup should instead be the head coach of the Canadian national team.
On the other hand, Landon Donovan admitted that the goal that gave the USMNT team the lead against Portugal in the 2002 World Cup actually came from a hand-assisted play.
However, the one under the spotlight this time is once again Tim Howard, as he has put forward his choice to succeed Crocker in the role.
Tim Howard Names Jim Curtin as Ideal U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Replacement
In a new episode of Unfiltered Soccer, Tim Howard and Landon Donovan discussed possible replacements for Matt Crocker. Among the names mentioned were Bob Bradley, Jim Curtin, Clint Dempsey, Cobi Jones, and Bruce Arena.
Without hesitation, Tim Howard stated that Jim Curtin is the right person to lead the United States Soccer Federation.
"I think Jim Curtin's a great shout. I think the Philadelphia Union is one of the very few teams that have sort of cracked youth development, so he has an understanding of that."
Adding: "He's run a team in this country. I think it's a good shout. Does Bob Bradley or Bruce Arena have the appetite to do that? Maybe. They obviously have the knowledge to do it. Jim's a good shout."
The reality is that the United States must urgently address the void left by Matt Crocker, which is why Tim Howard's preferred candidate is Jim Curtin, a figure who, during his time with the Philadelphia Union, helped develop a strong youth academy and build a project that continues to benefit the first team today.
Additionally, the new sporting director must oversee youth development, while also leading the search and selection process for the national team's head coach.
