Parents Outraged Over High Cost To Watch Youth Basketball Tournament
Should you have to pay to watch your kid play youth sports?
When I was growing up, I don't remember my parents ever having to pay to attend one of my sporting events, until high school at least. Every youth baseball, youth basketball, youth football, etc. event was free. And this wasn't just house league games, either. Travel games, from basketball to baseball, were free for parents.
But it seems like that is changing.
A former CNN host revealed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had to pay $30 to watch his 13-year-old play basketball.
"I just paid 30 dollars to see my 13 year old play basketball. Youth sports are broken," Chris Cillizza shared.
Everything costs money, of course, but should you have to pay to watch your kid play a game?
It seems ridiculous.
Parents sound off on 'broken' youth sports system
"I find parents that don't hate it have made it their social life. People who have a strong adult social life loathe it and only do it one year," one wrote.
"Youth sports aren't broken. Fake vanity travel sports are broken. My son only did recreational township sports & school sports. These are low cost. He was a D1 athlete in college," one fan added.
"We better build back YBA , CYO and serious middle school sports before its too late. All schools have gyms. Unfortunately the the VCs and hedge funds know parents will pay anything for a perceived better product More money and more travel is on the horizon for all sports," one fan added.
"Then don't sign your kid up for sports leagues that allegedly aim to get them ready to be pros. Zero ROI. Your kid's chances of becoming a professional athlete are worse than you winning mega millions lottery. Coach teams w/ their friends & play at the Y gym on weekends for fun," one fan added.
"I detest travel sports. Horrible for family time. They do nothing but inflate the egos of the parents who are pushing the kids. Oh, and of course, non stop travel on the weekends, and horrible food and non stop drinking at night in crappy hotels," one fan added.
"Oooooof - that's wild... So much has changed since I played sports as a kid," one fan added.
Whether it's travel ball or house league, though, parents seem to be in agreement - youth sports have jumped the shark.
