Harbor beach volleyball spikes visiting MVC | Local Roundup
Harbor High's beach volleyball team defeated Monte Vista Christian 4-1 in a Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League crossover dual match on Friday.
MVC won the match of the day at No. 1 pairs. Mayla Spahn and Jessie Ingram defeated Liberty Niesen and Lise Corstorphine 23-21, 21-23, 15-7.
Harbor won at the Nos. 2-5 spots, highlighted by Pirates juniors McKayla Goena and Sydney Elliot's win at No. 5 for their first varsity victory, 24-22, 21-15.
Dylan Schutz and Cecile Novembre won 21-6, 21-19, Coco Castro and Marina Tucker won 21-10, 21-11, and Swan Houssin and Gianna Fanara won 21-3, 21-5.
Harbor (6-1 overall, 2-1 league) hosts Scotts Valley on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Boys volleyball
At Pacific Collegiate 3, Everett Alvarez 0: Junior Leif McKarther had 20 kills and served three aces in the Pumas' 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 sweep in PCAL Mission Division match Friday.
Senior Son Mai-Clark and junior Emmet Partland each added six kills for the Pumas (7-5, 4-1).
PCS plays at Everett Alvarez (12-7, 1-3) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
High school baseball
At Soquel 7, Scotts Valley 2: Senior Brady Downs had three hits, including two doubles, one RBI, and scored twice in the Knights' SCCAL win Friday.
Senior Hudson Summerrill had two hits, one RBI, and scored three runs for the Knights (14-3, 5-1). Senior Sam Whelan and Connor Corlett, and junior Scotty Miller each had a hit and RBI.
Winning pitcher Jake Escalante gave up six hits, one walk, and two runs over four innings while striking out seven batters. Elliot Smith gave up seven runs, four earned, over 4 1/3 innings took the loss.
Matthew Casper had a hit and two RBI for the Falcons (5-11, 2-4). Bryce McDonnell and Ben Acton each had a hit and scored a run, and Dash Baker had two hits.
On Tuesday at 4 p.m., Soquel plays at SLV, and Scotts Valley plays at Santa Cruz.
At Palma 4, St. Francis 3: The Sharks were limited to three hits in their PCAL Gabilan Division loss Friday.
Sophomore Jacob Fonseca had a hit and scored twice for the Sharks (4-12-1, 4-8). Junior Jay Burns doubled and scored a run. Freshman Angelo Urabe Chavez had a hit and one RBI.
Junior Zach Gonzales had two hits, including a solo home run, for the Chieftains (12-6, 9-3), who led 4-1 through five innings.
St. Francis plays at Carmel (12-5, 11-1) on Monday at 4 p.m.
Hollister 11, at Monte Vista Christian 4: The Mustangs led 4-1 through five innings, but gave up nine runs in the sixth inning of their PCAL Gabilan Division loss Friday.
Junior Bryson Boles doubled, drove in two runs, and scored a run for the Mustangs (5-11, 2-9). Junior Mikie Melenudo had a hit and scored a run, and senior Luke Netzer had a hit and one RBI. Sophomore Jacob Trombly had two hits.
Junior Evan Mendoza had two hits, three RBI, and scored twice to lead the Haybalers (10-7, 8-3).
MVC hosts Sequoia (10-5) of Redwood City in a nonleague game on Saturday at noon.
Boys lacrosse
Soquel 6, Hollister 3: Jed Del Favero scored three goals in the Knights' PCAL win Friday.
Bo Blackwood had two goals and one assist for the Knights, and TJ Kusanovich had one goal and two assists.
Goalies Barry Lombardi and Daniel Bjorn split time and made a combined three saves.
Soquel plays at Salinas on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Girls lacrosse
Soquel 12, Aptos 9: Junior attacker Ashby Weeks scored five goals, and the Knights won their PCAL match at Harbor High on Friday.
Senior attacker Sophie Arnold scored three goals for the Knights. Senior midfielder Addie Somerville scored twice. Junior attacker Bianca Duran and sophomore midfielder Mila Estupinian added goals.
Sophomore defender Margot Rawlings forced 10 turnovers, and sophomore goalie Gianna Williams made 16 saves.
Girls swimming
Soquel 86, Harbor 78: Izzie Bridi-Milligan took first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.69) and 200 free (2:07.44) in the Knights' SCCAL meet win Friday.
The Knights also received wins from Caitlin Bridi-Milligan (200 individual medley, 2:33.21), Marria Talavera (100 backstroke, 1:13.81), Ayla Nelson (100 butterfly, 1:05.07), Jocelyn McCahill (100 free, 1:02.53) and their 200 medley relay (2:11.56) and 400 free relay (4:29.88) teams.
Harbor received wins from Ashley Fabian (100 breaststroke, 1:22.69), Lily Wilder (500 free, 7:01.03), and its 200 free relay team (1:59.09).
Boys swimming
Soquel 94.5, Harbor 59.5: Mateo Paiva took first in the 100 fly (57.31) and 500 free (5:35.63) in the Knights' SCCAL meet win Friday.
The Knights also received event wins from Jax Nolan (50 free, 23.28), Gabriel Suarez-Abraham (100 free, 52.47), Stryder Stelck (200 free, 1:56.03), Abel Guevara (200 IM, 2:43.40), and their 200 medley relay team (1:49.72).
Harbor received wins from Kai Henrikson (100 back, 1:04.16), Andrew South (100 breast, 1:18.78) and its 200 free relay (1:39.63) and 400 free relay (3:48.00) teams.
High school softball
At MVC 9, North Monterey County 7: Ava Alvarado had two hits, two RBI, and scored a run to help the Mustangs stunned the previously unbeaten Condors in PCAL Cypress Division action Friday.
NMC dropped to 10-6, 6-1.
Addison Boles and Sophia Lopez each had two hits and scored twice for the Mustangs (8-10, 3-5). Emma Casteel had two hits, one RBI, and scored a run. Gianna Calomeni and Addison Silva each hit a double, drove in two runs, and scored a run.
Silva pitched six innings and earned the win.
MVC plays at Stevenson (6-3, 5-2) in Pebble Beach on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Women's tennis
UC Santa Cruz 6, Hardin Simmons 1: The Banana Slugs won the doubles point and five of six singles matches in their team victory at Coppell High in Texas on Friday.
UCSC (7-9) faces Mary Hardin-Baylor (10-4) in Belton, Texas, on Saturday at 7 a.m.
Men's tennis
At Hardin-Simmons 5, UCSC 2: The Cowboys won the doubles point and four of six singles matches to secure the team victory at Coppell High in Texas on Friday.
UCSC (9-12) faces Mary Hardin-Baylor (8-5) in Belton, Texas, on Saturday at 10 a.m.
College baseball
At Ohlone 11, Cabrillo 2: Jayson Schmeisser had two hits, including a double, and scored a run in the Seahawks' Coast Conference South Division loss Friday.
Ferris Vitali doubledand scored a run for the Seahawks (16-22, 4-14), who totaled six hits.
Chuy Vasquez had four hits, two RBI, seven stolen bases, and scored four runs for the division leading Renegades (32-5, 15-3). Cam Hegamin had two hits, including a home run, three RBI, and scored twice.
Winning pitcher Drew Greenberg gave up two unearned runs over seven innings. Seahawks middle reliever Brady Liden was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs over three innings.
Cabrillo hosts West Valley (25-12, 11-7) on Tuesday and closes its season at Monterey Peninsula (22-16, 9-9) on Thursday. Both games start at 2:30 p.m.
