Leslie Schuemann has stepped down after a year-and-a-half run as Fresno Pacific’s athletic director.

Schuemann is leaving to become the associate commissioner of the Heartland Conference, an NCAA Division II league based in her home state of Texas.

Schuemann came to Fresno Pacific in July 2012 as senior associate athletics director and was promoted to director of athletics in January 2014 as the replacement for Dennis Janzen. A university news release said a national search for Schuemann’s replacement will begin immediately.

Schuemann’s tenure was marked by the program’s transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II status, a process that expected to be completed in July.

She has been responsible for three hires since taking over as athletic director: Ray Winter in track and field, Tim Kinser in men’s basketball and Rob Podeyn in women’s soccer.

Become arriving at Fresno Pacific, Schuemann spent five years at the NCAA’s national office as the assistant director of academic and membership affairs. And before that, she spent eight years at Texas A&M Kingsville, five as the assistant athletic director for compliance and three as an academic adviser.
