Feed hungry people, not landfills
It is beyond shameful how much fresh food is literally thrown away in this country. There is a scam perpetuated by the almighty and pernicious terms like “expiration date,” “use by, “best by” and “discard by.”
As I was grocery shopping today, I came across several dozen of my favorite organic eggs only to read that they had expired two days earlier. I asked the clerk what was to become of them only to be told that they were to be thrown out. I was incredulous. The irony was that the carton boasted… “NOW! Stays Fresher Longer.” The young man told me that it happens all of the time with meat. The audacity of America.
My taxes pay for food stamps, but somehow grocery store chains cannot partner with entities such as rescue missions, religious charities and homeless shelters to prevent valuable food from going to waste. They all want money instead. A movement needs to start – literally moving perfectly fine groceries from stores to places that will cook this food. Feeding people – not landfills.
