Turlock police release name, other details in officer-involved shooting

The Police Department has released the name of the suspect fatally shot by officers with a drug task force and other details of the incident, which happened Tuesday night in a parking lot near Starbucks and the Turlock Poker Room at a West Main Street shopping center.

The department identified the man killed by police as Omar Villagomez, 21, of Orosi in Tulare County. A news release states officers were trying to arrest Villagomez when the vehicle he was driving collided with unmarked police vehicles. Police then fired at Villagomez, killing him, according to the release.

The release said Villagomez’s passenger, Juan Bulgara, 27, of Farmersville in Tulare County, was not struck by gunfire but taken to a hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening. Bulgara is in custody on suspicion of methamphetamine possession with the intent for sales; transportation of methamphetamine; possession of a controlled substance while armed; and possession of a loaded and concealed firearm.

No officers were injured.

The officers are members of the Stanislaus Drug Enforcement Agency, which has officers from law enforcement agencies throughout the county. The Turlock Police Department declined to say which agencies were involved in Tuesday’s incident, which occurred about 7:15 p.m. in the 2300 block of West Main Street. Modesto police Chief Galen Carroll was on the scene Tuesday.

SDEA’s website states it was started by Modesto and the Sheriff’s Department in 1974 and has grown to include other law enforcement agencies, including Turlock and Ceres police. The website also states federal agents are assigned to the task force.

Turlock police are investigating the incident and declined Wednesday to release the names of the officers involved in the shooting.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Turlock police Detective Frank Navarro at 209-664-7319. Callers can leave an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636 and may be eligible for a reward.
