Woman slain in Saturday shooting in Fresno identified

A woman slain in a shooting Saturday afternoon in central Fresno was identified Monday as Angelita Mendez, 22.

The shooting took place near Belmont Avenue and Abby Street, according to Fresno police, but officers found two shooting victims, Mendez and a man, at Marks and Nielsen avenues, about 3.7 miles away, about 2:35 p.m.

Lt. Burke Farrah said Mendez was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 that was traveling north on Abby, north of Belmont, when a light-colored sedan pulled up next to the Chrysler and someone in the sedan fired multiple shots into the Chrysler, striking Mendez and the driver, her boyfriend. Two small children seated in the back were not hit.

The wounded boyfriend drove away and flagged down a motorist near Nielsen and Marks. Officers determined Mendez was dead. They gave aid to the driver and took him and the two children to Community Regional Medical Center. He was treated and released for a minor gunshot wound.

Family members took custody of the children.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
