A 25-year-old man Fresno police say was armed with a handgun was shot by officers early Sunday in the Fresno High area.

The man, identified Sunday afternoon as Sawon Samboon, 25, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in stable condition, Lt. Joe Gomez said. He remained there Sunday afternoon.

The incident began when two officers in one vehicle were patrolling near Wishon and Vassar avenues about 12:20 a.m.

When they tried to pull over a car going the wrong way on Wishon, Gomez said, the driver sped away with officers in pursuit. The driver crashed at the southwest corner of Wilson and Clinton Avenues and jumped from the car, running southeast while carrying a handgun.

The officers ran in pursuit while ordering the man to drop the weapon. Both officers then fired, striking the man several times.

Gomez said officers rendered first aid and called for an ambulance. Gomez said the man, who has several previous arrests, claimed affiliation with a Southeast Asian gang the last time he was booked into Fresno County Jail.

Both officers were wearing body cameras and were placed on paid administrative leave. This is the Fresno Police Department’s fifth officer-involved shooting this year.
