Officers responded to a report of gunfire on the 4500 block of East Hammond Avenue, near Olive and Cedar avenues, around 6 p.m. and found Cesar Chavez, 28, had been shot , Lt. Burke Farrah said. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and later died from his wounds.

Detectives learned the shooting resulted from a dispute between Chavez and Montejano, both gang members, Farrah said. Montejano fled after the shooting.
