One man dead, another injured in Mendota shooting

One man died and another was injured late Monday in a shooting at a home in Mendota, Fresno County Sheriff’s officers said.

According to the sheriff’s office, witnesses said the two men were in the garage of a home on the 500 block of Stamoules Street. The garage door was open and two men approached the house around 11 p.m., fired several bullets into the garage and ran away.

Mendota police officers arrived at the home and found the men with multiple gunshot wounds.

The sheriff’s office identified the man who was killed as Brian Cervantes, 21. A 32-year-old was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. He was listed in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.

The two victims are friends, the sheriff’s office said. The injured man lives at the home where the shooting occurred. It’s unknown where Cervantes, who was visiting the Mendota home, resided.

Detectives served a search warrant at the house. No arrests have been made.

Mendota police requested that the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office take over the investigation due to its access to resources and expertise in homicide investigations. This was the second homicide in Mendota this year. In 2014, there were no homicides in the city.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this case to contact detective Hector Palma at 559-600-8204, the sheriff’s office at 559-600-3111 or Crime Stoppers at 559-498-STOP (7867).
