Fresno police officer resigns amid investigation into prostitution involvement
A Fresno police officer resigned July 13 after he learned of an investigation into his alleged involvement with an accused prostitute operating locally, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Friday.
An investigation of Robert Knight, 43, began after police learned of his romantic involvement with Alicia Stapleton, 29, Dyer said. Stapleton was arrested in Fresno and cited with a misdemeanor offense after she allegedly solicited an undercover officer for a sex act on Craigslist.
Dyer said that Stapleton is involved with legal prostitution in the Reno, Nevada area. An internal affairs investigation of Knight indicated that Stapleton was his girlfriend, and a criminal investigation into Knight’s possible involvement with Stapleton’s alleged local prostitution began soon after.
The Fresno Police Department and the Fresno County District Attorney’s office will meet Monday to determine whether Knight will be arrested or cited on any criminal charges regarding his alleged assistance in the prostitution.
