San Joaquin man jailed in fatal shooting near Firebaugh
Fresno County sheriff’s detectives have arrested a San Joaquin man in the fatal weekend shooting of another man west of Firebaugh, the department announced Monday.
Juan Ortiz, 37, was arrested Saturday shortly after deputies found the body of Jose DeJesus Fuentes-Martinez, 52, of Dos Palos on a canal bank near Jerrold Avenue north of Nees Avenue.
Two people contacted Mendota police about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and said they had witnessed a shooting. Deputies learned that Ortiz may have been involved and was seen walking near Oller and 9th streets in Mendota. Deputies found Ortiz was carrying a gun. He was detained, interviewed and then arrested.
Ortiz was on post-release community supervision under the state’s prison realignment program.
