Fresno police are investigating the discovery of a body found in a canal Tuesday morning in west Fresno.

Spokesman Mark Hudson said officers were called to Marks and Nielsen avenues about 11 a.m., where a business owner reported that he had noted a foul odor in the area and workers then spotted the body in the water.

Police do not know the identity of the victim or whether the victim is a man or a woman. The department’s missing person’s unit was called in to help with the discovery.

Hudson said the water in the canal is moving at a fast rate and it’s possible that that the body drifted to the area from another part of Fresno.
