A free Labor Day weekend celebration is planned for Sept. 4 at the base of the Buck Rock Lookout at Sequoia National Park.

To kick off the event, local Wuksatchi elder Eddie Tupishna Sartuche will conduct a “Blessing of the Rock” at 10 a.m. The event will last until 3 p.m.

Barbecue, drinks and other treats will be available for small donations while displays featuring local history and park information will be made available.

Smokey Bear is expected to appear as fire watchers explain the workings of the active fire lookout, which will be open during an open house.

Entrance to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is $30. The annual event marks the reopening of the Buck Rock Lookout in 2000.

Parking is available 300 yards from the event.
