Body found in Bass Lake identified as Oakhurst woman

The body of the 48-year-old woman found in Bass Lake near Road 432 and Mallard Drive on Saturday has been identified as Viola Gillespie of Oakhurst, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office said.

A passer-by spotted the body on the edge of the lake by the boat docks around 5 p.m. on Saturday, said officials.

Gillespie was known to often go on walks in this area of the lake, the sheriff’s office said.

The cause of death remained under investigation Sunday night, but there is no indication of foul play, officials report.
