First warthog piglets born at Fresno Chaffee Zoo

In a first for the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, warthog piglets were born Friday afternoon, just in time for Mother’s Day, officials said.

The piglets’ mother, Zara, gave birth to the three piglets—one female and two males—after a five-month pregnancy. The San Diego Zoo donated Zara to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo in 2012. The piglets are in optimal health, zoo veterinary technician Denise Oberg said.

Zara and her piglets will not be exhibited for two to three weeks, officials said. They initially will be kept separate from the piglets’ father, Zuko, because mother warthogs can become aggressive towards their mates when the piglets are very young.
