Text messaging scam targeting CalWORKS recipients in Fresno County

Have you received a text recently prompting you to call CalWORKs? It could be a scam.

The Fresno County Department of Social Services is warning residents that the message did not come from them.

CalWORKs provides cash aid and services to eligible families that have children in the home.

After being prompted to call a number through a text message, an automated system asks for personal information such as an EBT card number, PIN, date of birth and Social Security number.

If you’ve received one of these messages, do not give out your personal information. Instead, contact the Department of Social Services at 855-832-8082.

If you did provide personal information after receiving one of those messages, you should contact police and file a report and contact the Department of Social Services.
