How you can help Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

Massive relief efforts by nonprofits such as the Salvation Army and American Red Cross and other organizations are underway to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana, and Valley residents can help out.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has deployed 42 mobile feeding units that each can provide up to 1,500 meals per day, plus two field kitchens that can serve up to 15,000 meals per day.

How you can donate: Go to helpsalvationarmy.org, call 800-725-2769 (SAL-ARMY) or text “STORM” to 51555.

American Red Cross

Volunteers from California have been dispatched to Texas to assist with relief, and more will likely follow them.

How you can donate: Go to www.redcross.org, call 800-733-2767 (RED-CROS) or text “HARVEY” to 90999 to add a $10 donation to the phone bill.

Meathead Movers

The Central California student-athlete moving company is collecting donations of clothing and baby products and transporting them to the Dallas Convention Center Mega Shelter. Fresno County residents can donate new, unopened goods that include underwear, socks, warmups for adults and children, toiletries, hygiene products, baby items such as formula, wipes, bottles, diapers and Graco Pack ’n Plays for babies to sleep in.

How you can donate: Items can be dropped off through Monday at Meathead Movers Mini Storage, 4744 N. El Capitan Ave., Fresno.

Save Mart Supermarkets

All 83 stores in the chain are collecting Red Cross contributions at checkout counters through Monday.

How you can donate: The amount of the donation is printed on the cash register receipt so customers have a record of the tax-deductible contribution.

Central California Blood Center

Officials are trying to ramp up blood donations to not only fill shelves for local needs during what they expect to be a busy Labor Day weekend, but also in anticipation of making some blood supplies available to hurricane-stricken areas.

How you can donate: Go to www.donateblood.org to check blood bank locations and hours.
