A boy riding a bicycle hit the side of a Fresno Unified school bus and the driver did not stop, a witness said.

The bus returned to the scene about 20 minutes later, the witness said, but it’s unclear if the driver of the bus saw the bicyclist, a juvenile.

The boy was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries Monday afternoon, according to Fresno County Emergency Medical Services.

The bus had 57 students on board and was going from Scandinavian Middle School to Clinton and Ninth. No injuries occurred to anyone on the bus.

Veronica Lemus of Fresno, a witness to the incident, said the boy appeared to be about 14 years old. He hurt his knee and was in pain but was conscious when the ambulance arrived, she said.

Lemus was driving north on Maple and was stopped at the intersection of Maple and Clinton waiting to turn left. She saw the bus heading south on Maple and making a right turn when the bicyclist hit the bus on the right side, she said.

“He got up and rode over here, but couldn’t keep going because he was hurt,” she said.

She stopped to help him, then called 911, she said. The boy’s grandmother arrived after he was in the ambulance.

Fresno police responded along with an ambulance and fire truck, she said.

The bus returned about 20 minutes later, she said.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
