Templeton’s ONX Wines acquires esteemed Paso vineyard
Templeton’s ONX Wines is expanding its estate with the purchase of the esteemed Kiler Canyon Vineyard this summer.
The 12-year-old winery has focused largely on unorthodox blends of 13 varietals grown on its 127-acre estate in the Templeton Gap. Kiler Canyon, in Paso Robles’ sought-after Willow Creek district, is one of the few vineyards from which ONX has purchased fruit.
“We fell in love with the place,” ONX winemaker Brian Brown said, calling it a logical purchase when it came up for sale. “There’s great variability on the site, which is a plus. It gives us a lot to work with.”
ONX proprietor Steve Olson purchased the 50-acre property from Don Hofer, who sold Kiler grapes to highly acclaimed wineries including Daou Vineyards, Booker Wines, Linne Calodo, Cypher and TH Estate Wines. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Brown and Olson, who praised the vineyard’s well-drained soils and varied sun exposure, are working on plans for the property, which grows syrah, grenache, mourvedre, tempranillo and viognier. For now, they expect to continue selling much of the fruit, eventually incorporating more of it into ONX’s portfolio.
