Parkside Tap House announces 30-day closure
CHICO - Parkside Tap House announced Thursday the business will be temporarily closed from July 1-July 30, following an Alcoholic Beverage Control license suspension.
The month-long closure will temporarily pause staff employment. Josh Marks, owner of Parkside, said that he hopes that employees will return upon reopening, but said that he doesn't fault them if they need to find other jobs.
"Unfortunately, we aren't in a position to pay wages while we are closed," he said. "I was able to give staff as much notice as possible, meaning they knew the day I found out we were going to be closed, so they could plan accordingly. I've encouraged them to apply for unemployment for the month."
He said that the business will still be responsible for all operating expenses, including rent, utilities, insurance and loan payments while the restaurant is closed.
Located in the heart of downtown on West Third Street, Parkside opened in early 2017 and offers pub-style food, craft beer and cocktails.
In 2025, the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control alleged that Parkside posed a problem for law-enforcement and permitted a "disorderly house" regarding frequent crimes like battery and public intoxication.
ABC cited seven incident reports occurring between Oct. 29, 2023 and August 11, 2024 that contributed to the decision, in which four accounts of battery and three accounts of public intoxication were listed.
On two occasions, Chico Police Department officers met with Parkside management to discuss unlawful activity. Police Capt. Jeramie Struthers attested that the number of police responses at Parkside were "disproportionate to other, nearby licensed establishments" and that the premises "created a repeated stress on patrol resources in July 2024," according to ABC documents.
ABC additionally cited 120 incidents or case entries that were associated with Parkside from Sept. 24, 2023 to Sept, 24, 2024.
In conversation with this newspaper, Struthers said that CPD has tried to "have a dialogue" with Parkside management, urging the business to comply with the rules of licensing.
"We've tried talking to them, but we aren't the alcohol police," he said, noting that ABC license compliance is outside of the Chico police's enforcement realm. Struthers also said that the Police Department has "zero interest" in businesses closing down.
"If you can't be responsible for your customers, you can't handle it," he said.
In September 2025, ABC issued a penalty revoking Parkside's liquor license for 30 days and imposing a 3-year revocation stayed, according to ABC documents.
Parkside attempted to appeal the decision, arguing that "the Department erred by admitting the hearsay statements of (Chico police) officers as testimony" and that "the penalty is too harsh," according to ABC documents. The appeal was denied in February 2026.
Parkside Tap House will reopen July 31. Operational updates can be found on the business' Instagram.
